Si single-junction and tandem efficiency limits
Reproduces theoretical efficiency limits for silicon single-junction and silicon-based tandem cells, including Auger and detailed-balance modeling.
This example reproduces theoretical JV performance limits for silicon-based solar cells. It covers the single-junction silicon “Auger limit” — with thickness-dependent calculations for undoped, 1 Ωcm n-type, and 1 Ωcm p-type silicon — and a tandem configuration pairing a silicon bottom cell with a Shockley-Queisser-limit top cell, including luminescent coupling between the cells.
The single-junction limits reproduce Fig. 4 of Niewelt et al., and the tandem model and its Fig. 2 data follow Fell et al., EES Solar 2025. Photon recycling is a paid-version feature; the free version reaches the same results with roughly a 0.1% efficiency penalty.
What this example covers:
- Auger-limited single-junction silicon efficiency vs. thickness for three doping cases
- Detailed-balance (SQ-limit) top cell paired with a silicon bottom cell
- Luminescent coupling and external-radiative-efficiency parameterization of non-radiative recombination
